The nightmare is far from over! HBO has officially renewed IT: WELCOME TO DERRY for a second season, meaning fans of Stephen King’s terrifying universe will be heading back to Derry for another round of blood-curdling horror, sinister mysteries, and, presumably, plenty of reasons to keep the lights on.
The HBO Original series, produced by Warner Bros. Television and executive produced by filmmakers Andy and Barbara Muschietti, has become a major hit since its debut, ranking among the top four series premieres in HBO Max history globally. The eight-episode first season is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
And yes, Pennywise’s story is getting even bigger.
Welcome Back to Derry
Based on Stephen King’s iconic IT novel and expanding upon the world established in Andy Muschietti’s IT and IT Chapter Two, IT: WELCOME TO DERRY digs deeper into the horrifying history of the infamous Maine town.
Season 2 will jump back in time to 1935 during the Great Depression, centering on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang. The group of bank robbers arrives in Derry to purchase ammunition, only to encounter a nightmare far more terrifying than anything they could have imagined.
In other words: Derry is once again proving to be a very bad place to stop for a little business.
Brad Caleb Kane will serve as showrunner for Season 2, while Andy and Barbara Muschietti will continue their roles as executive producers.
“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of HBO Max Original Programming. “Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.”
Warner Bros. Television President of Creative Affairs Clancy Collins White also teased that the upcoming season will take viewers even deeper into the mysteries lurking beneath Derry’s surface.
More Pennywise Lore Is Coming
Season 1 was met with plenty of critical praise, with Variety calling the series a “masterfully woven, intricate psychological horror,” while USA Today described it as “powerful and gripping.” Decider called it a “thrilling must watch,” and critics also praised the show’s striking visuals and escalating sense of terror.
Now, Season 2 promises to expand the mythology even further.
For the Muschiettis, returning to Stephen King’s world is a dream come true.
“Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege,” Andy and Barbara Muschietti said. “The support of our partners at HBO and Warner Bros. Television is priceless. Boy do we love our jobs!”
Honestly? We love that they love their jobs—especially when their jobs involve giving us nightmares.
With Season 2 moving into the 1930s and exploring another horrifying chapter in Derry’s history, there are plenty of questions about what fans will discover next. How will the Bradley Gang’s massacre connect to the larger mythology of Derry? What other secrets are buried beneath the town? And, of course, just how much Pennywise will we see?
One thing is certain: Derry still has plenty of nightmares left to unleash.
IT: WELCOME TO DERRY Season 1 is currently streaming on HBO Max. Season 2 is in development, with Brad Caleb Kane serving as showrunner.
