What happens when you mix the romantic storytelling of Nicholas Sparks with the twisty, supernatural-tinged filmmaking of M. Night Shyamalan? Apparently, you get Remain — and judging by the newly released teaser trailer, we may be in for one seriously mysterious Valentine’s Day.
Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled the official teaser for Remain, an unprecedented collaboration between best-selling author Nicholas Sparks and visionary filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, with Jake Gyllenhaal leading an intriguing cast.
And yes, there’s romance. There’s also a mysterious small town, a beautiful stranger, and the distinct feeling that absolutely nothing is what it seems.
Jake Gyllenhaal Enters a Dangerous Mystery in Remain
In Remain, Gyllenhaal stars as Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who travels to a small coastal town to complete his latest project. While there, Tate encounters an alluring young woman who manages to pull him out of his shell.
Unfortunately for Tate, getting out of his comfort zone comes with a rather significant catch.
He soon finds himself at the center of a deadly mystery hanging over the town, forcing him to confront secrets that could change everything.
Because this is an M. Night Shyamalan movie, we’re guessing that “mysterious coastal town” isn’t exactly synonymous with “peaceful vacation destination.”
The teaser certainly plays up that sense of unease while keeping many of the film’s biggest secrets firmly under wraps. And considering Shyamalan’s reputation for delivering unexpected twists, we’re probably better off knowing as little as possible before stepping into the theater.
A Very Unexpected Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks Collaboration
Perhaps the most fascinating element of Remain is the creative pairing behind it.
Shyamalan directs from a screenplay he wrote, based on a story developed by Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks. Sparks also serves as an executive producer on the film.
That combination promises an interesting blend of romance, mystery, and suspense — essentially taking the emotional pull of a Nicholas Sparks story and dropping it into the wonderfully unpredictable world of M. Night Shyamalan.
We’re already intrigued.

Remain Cast and Crew
Gyllenhaal is joined by Phoebe Dynevor, Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, and Jay O. Sanders.
Behind the camera, Shyamalan is joined by an impressive creative team including director of photography Adolpho Veloso, production designer Sam Lisenco, editor Noëmi Preiswerk, costume designer Caroline Duncan, casting director Douglas Aibel, music supervisor Gabe Hilfer, and composer James Newton Howard.
Shyamalan produces alongside Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock, and Theresa Park, while Sparks serves as executive producer.
When Does Remain Hit Theaters?
Warner Bros. Pictures will release Remain in theaters across North America on February 5, 2027, with the international rollout beginning February 3.
So, if you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day date movie that potentially involves romance, secrets, danger, and the possibility of a massive M. Night Shyamalan twist, Remain might be worth keeping on your radar.
Just remember: she’s unlike anybody he’s ever met.
And knowing Shyamalan, that’s probably the least mysterious thing about her.
