Age of The Nerd
The #TWDFamily just got a whole lot more unpredictable.
The Walking Dead: Dead City season three has unleashed a brand-new crew into the post-apocalyptic chaos, and episode five introduces fans to the larger-than-life ‘Dead Squad.’ Among them is Reverend Anthony, played by actor and musician Shawn Andrews — a character who looks poised to shake things up in a world where survival is already complicated enough.
For Andrews, joining The Walking Dead universe is another fascinating chapter in a career that has made him a familiar face to generations of movie fans. Long before stepping into the zombie apocalypse, Andrews became a cult-favorite thanks to his unforgettable turn as Kevin “Pickford” Pickford in Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused. The 1993 coming-of-age classic went on to become a cultural phenomenon, introducing audiences to a ridiculously talented ensemble that included Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Jason London, Parker Posey, Joey Lauren Adams, Adam Goldberg, Cole Hauser, Anthony Rapp and more.
Decades later, the love for Dazed and Confused — and for Pickford — hasn’t slowed down. Andrews has developed an entirely new generation of fans through social media, particularly TikTok, where his work and iconic character continue to find an enthusiastic audience. Now, that cult following is getting the chance to see Andrews in an entirely different kind of world as Reverend Anthony in The Walking Dead: Dead City.
Andrews is no stranger to taking unexpected creative turns. Alongside his acting career, he has always been a singer-songwriter, recently releasing his debut single “Ride Like Thunder.” The retro-meets-modern rock track was produced by Mathew Rucker and mastered by legendary music industry figure Howie Weinberg, adding another dimension to an artist whose career has consistently refused to fit neatly into one box.
With Reverend Anthony entering the Dead City landscape alongside the mysterious and high-energy Dead Squad, there are plenty of questions surrounding exactly what Andrews’ wild card character has in store. Is Reverend Anthony someone the survivors can trust? What does he really want? And how does Andrews approach bringing a new personality into one of television’s most recognizable post-apocalyptic universes?
We sat down with Shawn Andrews for an exclusive conversation about stepping into The Walking Dead universe, bringing Reverend Anthony to life, joining the Dead Squad, the enduring legacy of Dazed and Confused, his ever-growing social media following, and his latest musical chapter with “Ride Like Thunder.”
