Netflix has confirmed that its gripping crime procedural Dept. Q will return for a second season, following the global success of its debut. Adapted from Jussi Adler-Olsen’s bestselling novels, the series has struck a chord with audiences worldwide, spending six weeks in Netflix’s Global Top Ten after its launch.
Season 2 will once again be set and filmed in Edinburgh, a location that became a breakout star in its own right during the first season. Returning to lead the unconventional squad is Matthew Goode as DCI Carl Morck, alongside Alexej Manvelov as Akram, Leah Byrne as Rose, and Jamie Sives as Hardy.
At the helm is acclaimed writer-director Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit, Godless), who will continue to bring his signature flair for character-driven mystery and dark humor to the new season. Frank is joined by executive producers Rob Bullock and Charlotte Moore, with Netflix’s Mona Qureshi and Manda Levin overseeing production.
The series follows the unorthodox Dept. Q, a team of detectives relegated to the basement of an Edinburgh police station and tasked with solving cold cases once deemed unsolvable. Balancing propulsive storytelling with wry humor, the show dives deep into the twisted mysteries of both its cases and its misfit investigators.
Netflix executives Mona Qureshi and Manda Levin expressed their excitement:
“We are raring to return to Carl Morck and his band of glorious misfits at Dept. Q. Scott Frank brought us best-in-class storytelling and thrilled Netflix audiences worldwide. We can’t wait to see what Morck and the gang uncover in Season 2…. Edinburgh, we’re back.”
Executive producer Rob Bullock of Left Bank Pictures added:
“So, we are going downstairs to Dept. Q for a second season. We at Left Bank Pictures nervously await what Scott has in store for his alter-ego Carl Morck, and the other enabling members of team do-lally. We salute Netflix’s courage to let them loose once again.”
Scott Frank himself joked:
“I’m grateful to the folks at Netflix, as well as our shining cast and crew, for once more risking their careers to enable my folly.”
Meanwhile, leading man Matthew Goode shared his excitement:
“I’d like to thank Netflix for giving us the opportunity to further investigate Department Q’s storylines. We have a wonderful cast and crew, headed by our resident genius Scott Frank. I cannot wait to read what comes from his magic quill!”
With a proven track record of shocking twists, gripping cases, and character-driven drama, Dept. Q is primed to deliver another season of addictive television when it returns.
