Godzilla Minus Zero Unleashes a New Trailer, New Cast & Bigger Monster Mayhem

The sequel to Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One is coming to North American theaters November 6, 2026 — and the King of the Monsters is looking more terrifying than ever.

Godzilla is back, and apparently, destroying him once just wasn’t enough.

TOHO and GKIDS have unleashed a brand-new trailer for GODZILLA MINUS ZERO, the highly anticipated follow-up to Takashi Yamazaki’s Oscar-winning 2023 blockbuster Godzilla Minus One. Along with the new trailer comes a stunning new theatrical poster, several newly announced cast members, and the promise of a monster-sized cinematic experience that was practically built for the biggest screen possible.

And yes, there’s one very important detail right out of the gate: Godzilla survived.

The new trailer picks up two years after the devastating events of Godzilla Minus One and gives fans their first substantial look at what comes next. Japan has barely begun rebuilding when another catastrophic threat emerges, sending humanity scrambling to figure out how to stop the King of the Monsters once and for all.

Spoiler alert for the title: things are about to get very bad.

The trailer also introduces new characters and teases the latest Godzilla extermination operation, while bringing back a familiar face from Godzilla Minus One. Accompanying the trailer is a striking new poster featuring Godzilla surrounded by mysterious blue energy as brilliant golden lightning crashes down from above. Basically, the poster is screaming, “You thought the last movie was intense?”

Meet the New Faces of Godzilla Minus Zero

Along with the trailer and poster reveal, TOHO and GKIDS have announced several new additions to the cast.

Masami Nagasawa joins the film as Makoto Aoyama, a genius weather forecaster assigned to Japan’s Disaster Response Bureau. Jun Kunimura steps into the role of Dr. Ogata, while Ko Maehara plays Akira Hagiwara, the assistant to Professor Murakami, played by Min Tanaka.

Fans of Godzilla Minus One will also be happy to see Motosuke Iida returning as Akio Itagaki, the Toyo Balloon section chief whose contributions played an important role in the previous film’s Godzilla extermination operation.

The newly announced cast also includes Kenji Misuhashi, Eita Okuno, and Kai Inowaki, joining the previously revealed returning and new cast members.

The Sequel to an Oscar-Winning Monster Movie

Released in 2023, Godzilla Minus One took the world by storm with its combination of spectacular visual effects, deeply human storytelling, and a return to the terrifying roots of the Godzilla franchise. The film ultimately made history by winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, making it the first Japanese film — and the first Godzilla movie — to take home an Oscar.

Now, director Takashi Yamazaki is back behind the camera, and he’s taking the story into even more dangerous territory.

GODZILLA MINUS ZERO takes place in 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One. As post-World War II Japan continues its difficult recovery, the Shikishima family once again finds itself caught in the middle of an unimaginable catastrophe.

Only this time, Godzilla may be an even bigger problem.

The filmmakers promise more ambitious effects choreography and even more terrifying monster action while maintaining the human-focused storytelling that made Godzilla Minus One such a knockout. The result looks to be a sequel that isn’t simply interested in making Godzilla bigger — it’s looking to make the entire experience more intense.

Godzilla Is Going IMAX

If there was ever a Godzilla movie that demanded to be seen on the biggest screen available, this might be it.

GODZILLA MINUS ZERO was filmed entirely in Japan and is being touted as the first-ever Japanese production Filmed For IMAX®. The movie was shot using high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX and specifically optimized for the format’s unique sound and image presentation.

Translation: Godzilla is coming for your eyeballs.

The legendary kaiju will return to movie theaters on an even grander scale, promising jaw-dropping visual effects, monstrous destruction, and a theatrical experience designed to make audiences feel like they’re standing directly in the path of the apocalypse.

And considering what Yamazaki accomplished with Godzilla Minus One, that’s one terrifyingly exciting prospect.

When Does Godzilla Minus Zero Come Out?

GODZILLA MINUS ZERO will make its world premiere as the Spotlight Gala selection at the 64th New York Film Festival on Saturday, September 26, 2026.

The film will then roar into Japanese theaters on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, before beginning its wide theatrical release across North America on Friday, November 6, 2026.

GODZILLA MINUS ZERO Synopsis

Japan was reduced to zero by war. Godzilla plunged it into minus.

Two years later, the country is struggling to recover and reclaim some semblance of normal life. Just when humanity finally manages to hold onto a fragile peace, a new threat arrives and crushes that hard-earned hope in an instant.

There will be no third time.

Everything ends here.
