During San Diego Comic-Con, we had the privilege of sitting down with Alessandra Ferreri, the Head of Content at Wattpad. It was an excellent interview, providing valuable insights into Wattpad’s past and future. Alessandra began explaining how the company came to be. Wattpad started in the mid-2000s.
Alessandra explained that one of her favorite things about Wattpad is that it has turned into a community. “It blends a community aspect and a creative aspect. You can discuss the things you’re passionate about and receive feedback.”
Some of its Wattpad’s stories have been transformed into mainstream novels, TV series, and movies, such as the After and The Kissing Booth series. In January 2019, Wattpad launched its publishing division, Wattpad Books, to ease the effort for its authors.
Alessandra explained that you can post your story in various ways. You can sign up using your email address. Have to be over the age of thirteen. Post your story chapter by chapter or however you would like. Writing can be an isolated thing, as any writer knows, and it’s a great thing to get feedback and encouragement. You can embed images for your story. You can create your cover.
Wattpad also offers a tagging function to help readers find the stories they’re interested in, and gives authors a chance to define what they are trying to tell. There were over 665 million story uploads in total. The site has 90 million monthly users” with the more accurate “Wattpad is part of WEBTOON Entertainment’s IP & Creator Ecosystem which encompasses approximately 155 million monthly active users, 26 million global creators and 64 million global titles.”Its most popular genres are romance, teen fiction, and fan fiction.
