Sony Pictures have released the first trailer for ‘The Girl In the Spider’s Web‘, the latest cinematic iteration of author Steig Larson‘s Millennium saga. The reboot sees Claire Foy taking over the iconic role of Lisbeth Salander, with ‘Evil Dead‘ (3013) and ‘Don’t Breathe‘ helmer Fede Alvarez stepping into the director’s chair this time around. Although plot details are being kept under pretty tight wraps a this point, the film follows Salander and Blomkvist years after the events of ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo‘ as the two re-unite to uncover a new mystery from their own past.
The last time that we saw the character brought to the big screen was with David Fincher‘s 2011 big-budget remake of Larson’s original ‘Dragon Tattoo’ novel, but this trailer seems to be trying to differentiate itself from that film as much as possible, which is probably a good thing. Although these movies traditionally paint Salander as more of an antihero, this movie seems to be interested in taking the character into full vigilante mode. I haven’t read any of these novels, so it’s hard for me to compare this to the source material, but it seems like a weird move to take the character in this direction.
What does work for me in this trailer is how wonderful the tone seems to be. I’m loving the horror aesthetic that Alvarez brings to the table, ensuring that this film differentiates itself in terms of both tone and visual aesthetic. ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’ also stars Lakeith Stanfield, Sylvia Hoeks, Stephen Merchant, Claes Bang, Christopher Convery, Synnøve Macody Lund, and Vicky Krieps. The film arrives in theaters on November 9th, 2018.
