‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Will Be A Pseudo-Sequel To ‘Captain America: Civil War’

Avengers: Infinity War was once a pretty tightly sealed-operation, not even the actors knew how the movie would end. But now that the the film is a little over month for hitting theaters, a great deal of information has begun to surface about the film. Serving as a culmination event for the 18 films that have come beforehand in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Infinity War is probably as big of a Marvel movie that’ll ever get.

Although last month just saw the most recent Marvel Studios release with Black Panther, there hasn’t been a MCU to follow up the avengers saga since Captain America: Civil War. While that film left a lot on the table by the time that the credits rolled, it seems that Avengers: Infinity War will serve as a direct continuation of Civil War, at least in terms of plot threads that were left open in that film. When speaking with a group of journalists on the set of Avengers: Infinity War last year, Joe and Anthony Russo confirmed as much:
“It’s a direct corollary to the end of Civil War, you’re going into this film with the ramifications of that film at the forefront of this film.”
Considering that all the marvel releases since Civil War have bridged the two year gap between that film and Infinity War, and that all of the releases since then have essentially taken place during those two years, it makes sense that Infinity War would continue those plot threads since it’s the most current MCU film in terms of timeline up to this point. So unlike Avengers: Age of Ultron, it seems that Infinity War will take the events of the last few films, especially when you consider the presence of the infinity stones throughout. Elaborating, Anthony Russo had this to say:
’For us, since we entered the MCU as storytellers, and we picked up the story with Winter Soldier, we’ve been carrying a thread forward from that point, a narrative thread. And for us this movie is very much about, how do we move forward from Civil War in a big way, and what happens to that division between the Avengers and how does that affect them. What does that mean when the greatest threat they’ll ever face comes to them, in that kind of a condition, in that kind of divided condition.”
Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Benedict Wong, Tom Hiddleston, Benicio Del Toro, Danai Gurira and Josh Brolin. The film recently pushed up it’s release date, and now hits theaters on April 27, 2018. Here’s the official synopsis:

As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
